Srinagar: The automation of library in Government College for Women, M.A Road has started, 67 years after its establishment.
Officials said that the automation was need of the hour as it would reduce manual work and save time.
Librarian of the college, Umaira said that from now on all the data related to books will be accessible through computers.
She said that they would access the books through OPAC (online public access catalogue facility) in the library, whereby books can be searched through various bibliographical approaches like title, subject, accession number, classification number, location as well.

“The bar-coding process will be generated with the help of barcode scanners and a touch screen monitor will be available for the OPAC facility for the patrons of the library,” she said.
The officials will also provide library tokens to users while entering the library and the format of information will be changed from printed to electronic/online resources. The library is also going to install surveillance cameras.
Students were happy over the development.

“We were facing a lot of problems while the books were being issued by the librarian because the process of finding the books is very time consuming. The automation will be beneficial to every student,” said Bisma Mehraj, a media student of the college.
A teacher said that the use of information technology in libraries has become inevitable in an era of information explosion and the emergence of a wide range of new technologies.
