





Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar organised a 2-day workshop on the theme ‘Literature and Journalism: The Common Code of Writing’ on December 12 and 13, 2024.
Senior Producer, Education Multimedia Research Centre (University of Kashmir) and noted writer, Mr. Ajaz-ul-Haque was the resource person for the workshop organised by Department of Journalism & Mass Communication and Department of English.
The workshop was based on four sessions, spanning two days, and was attended by students from Department of English and Department of Journalism besides the faculty members.
The first session titled ‘Journalism and literature: Rivals or allies’ delved into the craft of writing for different modes of communication. The second session titled ‘Poetry as literature, lyrics as journalism’ explored the art of creative writing. The third session titled ‘the magic of setting the screen on fire’ was based on film writing- story, screenplay and dialogues.
In the last exercise-based session, participants shared their creative work including poems, scripts, dialogues, advertisement ideas and slogans. The resource person evaluated the works in the light of what was discussed during the workshop. Besides providing individual feedback, he also answered the queries of the participants.
Earlier, while welcoming the resource person, Principal of the host college, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq said the workshop served as an important opportunity for students to learn the craft of writing.
“Writing is a lifelong journey. It requires dedication, passion, and a willingness to learn and grow. The ability to communicate complex ideas, thoughts, and opinions in a clear, concise, and engaging manner is essential for success in both English literature and mass media,” said Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen.
While appreciating the initiative, she said the college will continue to organise such outcome-based workshops across different disciplines.
While spelling out the objectives of the workshop, Dean Arts and HOD English, Prof. Rubeena Khateeb said, “The workshop was meant to encourage students to think creatively and develop their unique writing style. Such workshops provide an opportunity to students to learn, practice and refine their writing skills. Students can share their work and receive feedback, which helps to build their confidence as writers.”
The resource person shared valuable tips for writing in a clear and effective manner across the different genres. He cited multiple examples from books, films, songs and other creative fields to convey the basic principles followed by the professionals.
Pointing to pervasive “dull writing”, Mr. Ajaz advocated originality of thought and expression. He underlined the need to use simple, specific and clear language even when expressing complex ideas.
Arguing that reading is a craft which requires patience and practice, Mr. Ajaz listed the various tools which make one a better reader. He also pointed to the use of unnecessary words, circular constructions, pompous frills and meaningless jargon. He quoted from works of famous authors and popular dialogues from films to illustrate his arguments. Mr. Ajaz also shared his experiences and anecdotes much to the delight of the audience. He also shared excerpts from his own works.
Earlier, the Co-coordinator of the workshop and Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. Suhail Ahmad briefed the audience about the impressive profile of the guest speaker. “He is known for his sharp wit and his uncanny skill of using words in a clever and humorous way. So it’s always a delight to listen to him,” said Dr. Suhail.
The Co-coordinator of the workshop and senior faculty from the Department of English, Dr. Abina Habib conducted the proceedings of the last session. Presenting the Vote of Thanks, Dr. Abina said the two-day workshop was a resounding success. “The workshop encouraged students to think critically and analytically, which are essential skills for success in journalism and English,” said Dr. Abina.
The second and third session of the workshop was moderated by Prof. Asma Arshi and Prof. Sheikh Mohammad Irfan respectively.
