DJMC holds day-long workshop on ‘Beat Reporting’

A day-long workshop on ‘Beat Reporting’ was organized by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women Srinagar for the students of Semester 3 and 1 on September 14, 2022.

The resource person for the workshop was noted journalist and Bureau Chief of Kashmir Life news magazine, Mr. Yawar Hussain.

The guest speaker shared his experience and valuable tips for covering various important news reporting beats including politics, administration, education and environment. He also referred to the changing trends in journalism with more and more importance given to multimedia skills of journalists.

Yawar said aspiring journalists should understand the structure and functioning of various government departments in order to cover them effectively.

He stressed on the need for comprehensive and in-depth news stories. He referred to the need for inculcating the habit of reading and developing good communication skills to elicit information from people.  He further said the understanding of a subject is very important. “For a political beat reporter, for instance, it is important to read and know the history,” Yawar said.

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Ruhi Jan Kanth was the Patron of the workshop while Head of Department, Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr. Suhail Ahmad conducted the proceedings of the session.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session wherein the expert answered the queries of the inquisitive students. The workshop evoked encouraging feedback  from the participating students.
