As we welcome 2025, I extend best wishes to the Editorial Board of ‘Harbinger’, the website administered by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. I appreciate the outstanding work being done by the team at ‘Harbinger’. The portal has become a vibrant platform for journalism students to showcase their talents in multimedia storytelling, photography, and writing. The diverse range of content, from news features and photo essays to opinion pieces and musings, is truly impressive. It’s heartening to see students tackling pressing issues, sharing their perspectives, and telling stories that need to be told.
Journalism and Mass Communication has evolved into one of the flagship programmes of Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is now vested with the responsibility of running three parallel programmes including 2-year Postgraduate, 5-year Integrated and 4-year UG programmes. Earlier also, the department handled innovative UG programmes like Mass Communication & Multimedia Production (MCMP), B. A. (Honours) Multi Media And Mass Communication (BMMMC) and B.A. (Honors) in Journalism and Mass Communication. From MCMP, the department and the degree title was changed to Journalism and Mass Communication under the aegis of Cluster University Srinagar in 2017, allowing for more flexibility in the curriculum.
Amid the proliferation of media content, the students of Journalism and Mass Communication have their task cut out in an industry which has increasingly become competitive. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is mindful of the new trends and challenges. To prepare the students better, the department introduced ‘Media Project’ and ‘Internship’ components in its curriculum since the very inception. The best way to hone their skills is follow up the theoretical lessons learnt in the classrooms with practical exposure.
With Head of Department, Dr. Suhail Ahmad as its Editor overseeing a team of student sub-editors, ‘Harbinger’ provides a valuable in-house platform which instills the confidence among students to share their work with the world. I also appreciate how ‘Harbinger’ serves as a window into the events and activities of the department, keeping readers informed and engaged. Please keep up the fantastic work! I look forward to seeing more exciting content from ‘Harbinger’ in the future.
